Perhaps you’ve heard of Jack and his Beanstalk? Well most people have no idea that the story you heard as a child was merely a misinterpretation of the original true tale of Colonel Augustus’ own Grandfather, Gran Pappy Deese, and his magical nut vine. He first planted his vine in the valleys of Virginia on his farm in 1769. Up till that time no one ate peanutes, to them they were merely legumes! Well try as he might to convince the commoners of the true value of his nuts, Gran Pappy failed. He died in poverty mocked by his peers, who brutaly scorned him and labeled him “The Crazy Old 69′er” after the year in which he started his crop. The story goes that many years later the young Colonel Deese was playing in a field when he was visited by the ghost of Gran Pappy Deese who showed him the location of his nut vine, now tucked into a hidden grove in the forest. The Colonel was to look after Deese Nuts until he was a man. There would come a time when Deese Nuts would be needed, and young Augustus was to ensure that his nuts were ready. During the great Civil War Augustus found a need for his nuts as they filled the mouths of so many wanting ladies, and promised that as long as he were alive no mouth would go without Deese Nuts. His followers proudly took on the title of the once mocked Gran Pappy Deese, continuing the Colonel’s holy duty in the name of that Crazy Old 69′er.
